Google announced on Wednesday a new ultra-capable artificial intelligence model to be the cornerstone of the Gemini 4 model generation, in a new attempt to catch up with competitors Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI race.
A company spokesperson mentioned that the new model, named Argon, surpasses the size of the previous advanced Pro model series launched by Google.
The spokesperson said: "It is our strongest performing model to date, designed to handle complex work tasks. We see it as comparable to the leading models in this field - such as OpenAI's Astra model and Anthropic's Opus model in key performance metrics related to programming and cybersecurity."
Google indicated that it is currently providing the model to selected partners in the cybersecurity field, and it is also participating in the voluntary process initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump to grant access to the models before their official release; however, the company did not specify a timeline for the public launch of the model.
According to a press release from the company, the Argon model achieved better results than the Astra and Opus models in terms of self-reported performance across various industry-standard metrics. However, Argon's performance lagged in other specific metrics, including 2 out of 4 programming-related metrics listed by Google in its statement.
The company's spokesperson stated that "Google" no longer plans to launch the "Gemini 3.5 Pro" model, which CEO Sundar Pichai had previously announced intentions to release in June.
During the interim period, Google underwent a comprehensive restructuring of its artificial intelligence lab, DeepMind, where its founder and CEO Demis Hassabis stepped down, and several leaders responsible for developing the Gemini model left the company.
Months of delays in launching the AI model have caused the company to fall behind its competitors Anthropic and OpenAI, which have continued to push the boundaries of scientific research and innovation through new releases of their leading models.
Although Pichai had rejected in July the idea that "Google" is losing its position in the AI race, the company has changed its communication strategy in recent months, shifting from focusing on promoting the highly advanced capabilities of the Gemini models to highlighting the competitive cost advantage it has compared to competing companies' models.
