The Pennsylvania Department of Health stated on its website that the number of measles cases reached 943 as of Wednesday, as the state faces an increasing spread of the highly contagious disease.
Earlier this month, Pennsylvania reported 4 deaths related to measles among unvaccinated residents, which sparked a dispute between Governor Josh Shapiro and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding the number of deaths directly caused by the virus.
The website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that there have been two measles-related deaths in the country this year.
Data indicated that the United States recorded 3,659 measles cases as of September 24.
The centers stated that they are working with epidemiologists in the states to establish a unified definition for measles-related deaths.
In July, the United States announced that cases of measles reached the highest level since 1991.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and often spreads during periods of increased travel, such as spring break, or in situations where unvaccinated individuals are in crowded places.
Measles can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, and rash, and can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
