Two people have died and another is missing due to heavy rains and floods that swept through the Catalonia region in Spain, authorities announced on Sunday.
Catalonia's President, Salvador Illa, confirmed the death of a man after a wall collapsed in the town of Tordera, north of Barcelona, in a post on his social media account.
The fire department reported that another person died in Montornès del Vallès on Sunday, while emergency services were searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar, a town located 52 kilometers north of Barcelona.
The Catalonia authorities issued a red warning and urged residents to stay indoors from 8 PM on Saturday (18:00 GMT) until 2 PM on Sunday (12:00 GMT), due to the possibility of what they described as a "small hurricane" reaching the northeastern region, with expectations of more heavy rainfall.
Water flooded homes, and cars remained submerged in Bellvitge and Cornellà near Barcelona after heavy rains on Saturday, and ducks were seen swimming in large water pools that formed on highways in Barcelona.
Sarai Sarouka, the director of the regional meteorological agency (Meteocat), said on Saturday that a center of an exceptional weather system was over the Mediterranean, and that a "small hurricane" could move over land in Catalonia.
The newspaper "La Vanguardia" reported on Saturday that flights were canceled and others were delayed at Barcelona Airport.
All local transport trains were disrupted due to flooding, shops closed their doors early, football matches were canceled, and a performance of Verdi's opera "Aida" at the Liceu Opera House in Barcelona was also canceled.
