Musk Participates in Leading the Meridian Project to Anticipate Future Weapons and Warfare Technologies

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that billionaire Elon Musk will participate in leading the "Meridian Project," a new initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Defense aimed at anticipating the nature of wars in the coming years and decades, and determining the weapons and technologies that its forces will need.

Fox News reported that Musk will lead the project alongside billionaire defense technology expert Palmer Luckey and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, under the supervision of Emile Michael, the Chief Technology Officer at the Department of Defense.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon), Hegseth assigned the "Meridian Project" the task of identifying the capabilities needed to achieve American technological superiority on next-generation battlefields, with Michael overseeing the project assignment, while Musk, Luckey, and Gingrich participate in its leadership.

Hegseth stated during the "State of the Forces" address at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, that the project will begin its work immediately, with the department setting a 120-day deadline to complete the mission.

Fox News noted that Hegseth intended to meet with Musk, Luckey, and Gingrich at a secure location about 200 yards from the platform where he delivered his speech, following the conclusion of the address.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth intends to reduce the number of positions allocated for generals and admirals by 20% during a speech he will deliver to members of the armed forces on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Pentagon, the "Meridian Project" is studying the full spectrum of future warfare domains, ranging from the depths of the earth to the areas between the earth and the moon, with the aim of identifying the areas where the United States needs to develop its capabilities and the technologies it needs to master.

The statement added that the project will work on discovering, developing, and accelerating the deployment of advanced systems that U.S. forces may need in future battlefields, culminating in a final unclassified report available to the public, along with a classified annex.

The American network reported that the project will attempt to chart the evolution of wars, domains, and technologies over the coming years, focusing on identifying the capabilities that U.S. forces may need in future generations, rather than establishing new military strategies or policies.

The project draws on expertise from the private sector, academia, and policy and technology fields, in an effort to identify developments that may shape the nature of future battlefields.

Fox News pointed out that Musk and Luckey are entering the project with direct experience in developing technologies used by U.S. forces.

Musk's company, SpaceX, is one of the major contractors with the U.S. Department of Defense, while Luckey founded Anduril Industries, which specializes in defense technology, autonomous systems, and advanced weapons.

The network stated that the two men's expertise in the defense technology sector gives them direct insight into technological developments and the modern battlefield, but it also noted that their involvement could raise questions about conflicts of interest, given that their companies compete for defense contracts and work.

Dismissals and disputes initiated by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have led to a leadership vacuum in the U.S. military at a time when it faces increasing challenges from drone and missile warfare.

The 'Meridian Project' is part of a series of initiatives announced by Hegseth on Wednesday to reshape the U.S. armed forces around autonomous warfare and rapidly evolving technologies.

Heigseyth announced the establishment of the "Self-Warfare Command," a new 4-star combat command aimed at expanding the use of autonomous and robotic systems across various branches of the armed forces.

The new command is set to become a functional 4-star combat command by October 1, 2027, while Heigseyth directed the programs, research, and evaluation management for unmanned systems to lead the "Agincourt" project that paves the way for the command's establishment, according to the statement.

The ministry also announced the beginning of the establishment of new functional frameworks within the branches of the armed forces to create career paths dedicated to what Heigseyth described as a new generation of "self-fighters."

Heigseyth stated, according to Fox News, that the U.S. Army should have started considering the establishment of a self-warfare command 10 years ago, pointing out that "Meridian" was designed to look far enough ahead to anticipate the next technological shift before the armed forces fall behind.

The project is part of 6 major initiatives announced by Heigseyth in his speech at Quantico, which include, in addition to the "Self-Warfare Command" and the "Meridian Project," the establishment of the "U.S. Military Student Corps," the launch of the "Fortress America" program to enhance the resilience of bases and defense supply chains, the project to establish a new U.S. military base, as well as the creation of an office for religious affairs.

Fox News reported that Wednesday's speech was the second version of the annual "State of the Forces" address delivered by Hegseth at Quantico Base, but this time the audience included younger officers and non-commissioned personnel, instead of the senior military leaders who attended last year's speech.

According to the network, Hegseth described the attendees as "current and future leaders on the front lines," and stated that the speech would become an annual occasion to assess the state of the forces and present his vision for their future.
