The 31st Edition of the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival Kicks Off in Morocco

The 31st edition of the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival in Morocco kicked off on Saturday, featuring more than 20 films and honoring 3 filmmakers and stars from Morocco, Cyprus, and Italy.

Sharafat Afailal, the president of the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival Foundation, said during the opening ceremony: "Cinema in the Mediterranean has always suffered from significant production challenges and a narrow distribution horizon, and this is where the value of this festival lies, as we host each year a selection of distinguished films that reflect the audience's and filmmakers' attachment to the values of life and beautiful art."

The festival, which runs until October 10, showcases 10 feature and documentary films in its official competition from Morocco, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Tunisia, France, and Palestine, in addition to 6 films in the 'Heartbeat' program, selected for their artistic value and humanitarian themes, as well as screening 3 classic Moroccan films outdoors in the Feddan Square.

The festival also dedicates a program for children that includes screenings of animated films at the Espagnole Cinema, in coordination with the regional directorate of national education.

In addition to film screenings, the festival organizes a screenplay development competition as part of the 'Tetouan Workshops', featuring 10 projects from Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, France, Tunisia, and Morocco, and holds discussions on cinema, literature, and culture in the Mediterranean basin.

The opening ceremony included an introduction to the judging committees, honoring Moroccan director Hicham Al-Asri, Cypriot actress Bobi Afrem, and Italian director Peter Marcias, along with a multimedia presentation titled "Divergence," directed by Yassine Ahjams.
