The Central Election Commission in Russia announced on Monday that the ruling party "United Russia" easily won the parliamentary elections, which President Vladimir Putin described as a test of support for the war in Ukraine, after more than 95% of the votes were counted.
The commission reported that "United Russia" received 57.83% of the votes, compared to 49.8% it received in the previous elections in 2021 for the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.
The commission clarified that these results will grant "United Russia" 355 seats in the Duma, which has 450 seats, allowing it to maintain a constitutional majority.
The head of the Russian Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, described the level of openness and transparency in the electoral process in Russia as a "great achievement," noting that the election proceedings were made available for live viewing online, according to the RIA Novosti agency.
Pamfilova stated during the presentation of the preliminary results of the ninth Duma elections at the commission's media center: "You can basically watch everything live online. I believe this is a great achievement for us, and it demonstrates the highest levels of transparency and openness in the process."
She added that all concerned parties were given the opportunity to monitor the electoral process, compare and analyze, as well as ask questions and receive answers.
The elections for the State Duma in its ninth term, along with other electoral events in Russia, took place from September 18 to 20.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the State Duma elections as the most important internal political event in the country.
