A widely circulated video in Libya has sparked much controversy after it documented heavy gunfire from automatic weapons during a wedding in the city of Zawiya, in the west of the country, in a scene that reflects the ongoing phenomenon of using weapons at social events.

The video, which gained extensive circulation on social media and Libyan platforms, showed the groom holding an automatic weapon equipped with a belt of ammunition, firing randomly into the air amidst a gathering of wedding participants, coinciding with festive atmospheres and intense red lighting.

The scenes drew widespread criticism from users who expressed their rejection of turning weapons into tools of celebration, and their discontent with the recurring phenomenon of gunfire at weddings and events in Libya, and the dangers it poses to participants and residents, especially with the use of automatic weapons and random shooting in populated areas.

Nabil Shahboun wrote in a post, "In underdeveloped societies, the concept of the state, law, and order ends, and the family, tribe, and city prevail in their place, questioning, 'What if a stray bullet hits a child or an innocent citizen, who will bear the responsibility?'"

Another user named "Son of Tripoli" asked, "How long will weapons remain a means of joy and boasting at some weddings?" referring to the repeated scenes of gunfire during events in Libya.

The phenomenon of gunfire at weddings and social events raises recurring concerns in Libya, especially with the use of automatic weapons, amid the dangers of stray bullets on civilians, while calls continue to curb these practices and prevent the use of weapons outside legal frameworks.
