- Argentina national team coach, Lionel Scaloni, announced the "Tango" squad for friendly matches during the upcoming international break. Lionel Messi's name was included in the squad that will face the Benin national team on October 6, at the "Monumental" stadium, which has a capacity of nearly 84,000 spectators.
Messi's call-up for this match is to receive a farewell and tribute, after he announced his retirement from international play. The 39-year-old decided to hang up his international boots on August 31, describing the decision as "painful."
The Inter Miami star said at the time: "After some time since the final match (of the World Cup), and after thinking about it a lot, I would like to announce to everyone that I will retire from playing with the national team." He added: "It was a painful decision, and it still hurts me deeply, but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I have always given my best, not only in the last few years when we won everything, but also before that."
He continued: "I have always fought and left everything on the pitch for this shirt, to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football." Lionel Messi has played 207 international matches, scoring 125 goals and providing 68 assists, and he won the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar with his national team.
